Preparing for a wedding is important, and that is why a checklist of all the important to-dos before your big day is a must. While hair removal is not an essential requirement that needs to go on that list, laser hair removal has become a popular choice for many brides-to-be.
Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Shari Marchbein, gives her expert insight into the world of laser hair removal. These are the things she says you need to know.
The Basics
Selective photothermolysis is when a wavelength of light targets a specific color target, and this results in hair removal. The highly concentrated light is beamed into hair follicles which will then remove the hair from your body. “The most common areas I treat are underarms, bikini, chin/jawline/upper lip, and sideburns,” says Marchbein, adding, “I think everyone is basically tired of waxing or shaving.”
When to Start?
According to Marchbein, the best time to start laser hair treatment is about six to 12 months before your wedding day. This is because it can take at least six months to see the full results. After you begin, you should plan for “Three to six sessions spaced every four weeks.”
Before You Book
It is important to know that “You cannot wax, thread, or use any method of hair removal other than shaving for four weeks prior,” says Marchbein. It is also important to note that results are not immediate from laser hair removal, and several treatments, as indicated above, are needed.
Who is Eligible?
Unfortunately, not everyone is a good candidate for laser hair removal. Marchbein stresses that it should never be performed when a person is tanned or sunburned, nor if they have an active infection. She also states, “It does not work well on blonde or red hair, and extreme caution needs to be taken with those with darker skin. Specific lasers (such as the NDYag) need to be used on individuals with more pigment in their skin, and I would recommend seeing a board-certified dermatologist who has significant laser experience for this.”
Best Advice
For anyone considering laser hair removal, Marchbein warns, “There are many offices and spas offering inexpensive package deals. However, those performing the laser treatment are often not trained well. I have seen many complications from inexperienced providers including burns which can lead to permanent scarring.” It is, therefore, important to seek out a board-certified dermatologist before having the treatment done.
