Tom Cruise Has Had Many Relationships, But Scientology Always Seems To Get In The Way

During his lengthy acting career, Tom Cruise has been linked to a string of famous ladies and has been married twice. Taking a look back, there was something many had in common.

While filming Risky Business, it became widely known to the film crew that Rebecca De Mornay and Cruise began having an affair. Their romance was scandalous since Mornay was three years older than Cruise, and because she was in a relationship at the time with Harry Dean Stanton who was 33 years her senior.

Tom’s luck with the ladies started from an early age, and when filming the iconic Risky Business at just 19 years old, his co-stars became aware of his off-set antics. Curtis Armstrong claimed that there would be a line of ladies waiting outside Cruise’s trailer on set.

He also noted that his co-star would balance his time between women and bible study. However, while all these women waiting outside his trailer were hoping to get close to the star, there was one lady Tom already had his eyes on.

Although he became an A-List actor from a young age, Tom had always been religious and always made time to read the bible. However, while Tom would preach that he was a born-again Christian who wished to live by his religious values, the same could not be said when it came to his relationships.

When he began his relationship with De Mornay, he was technically committing adultery, and their affair continued post-filming. Meanwhile, after their relationship ended, Tom found a preference in older women.

Having had his experience with an older woman, Tom continued to date a number of notable women that were older than him. In 1985, Cruise briefly dated Patti Scialfa who was nine years his senior, and then he went on to date someone that threw everyone by surprise.

In later years, it was revealed that Cruise had a fling with superstar Cher, who was 39 at the time, while Cruise was just 23 years old. Their unexpected romance was not to last, but Cruise did continue to date older women.

It was believed that Cruise had dated The Little House on the Prairie actress, Melissa Gilbert, during his early years in Hollywood. According to Gilbert, she met Cruise when “he was a struggling starving actor, and I was working.

I actually bought him his first set of dishes.” Meanwhile, during an interview on Watch What Happens Live!, the actress claimed the couple only shared a few kisses, but that she and Cruise never went further in a more physical way.

After his brief fling with singing sensation Cher, Tom found himself in a more stable relationship. Tom met fellow actress Mimi Rogers at a dinner party just a few years into his career, and the pair began dating shortly after.

Although Mimi was six years his senior, it was not going to come in the way of their love. In 1987, Cruise and Rogers went onto get married in a secret ceremony in New York City, and Mimi was the person who essentially changed Cruise’s life.

It was because of Mimi Rogers that Tom Cruise was introduced to Scientology and has since practiced the religion. Rogers’ father, Phil Spickler, was incredibly close to the founding father of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, and Rogers became a respected auditor as a result.

An auditor in the religion is someone who asks a parishioner a series of questions, and they must respond honestly and without judgment from the auditor. Mimi opened an auditing practice with her ex-husband, Jim Rogers, and introduced Cruise to Scientology when they began dating.

After just three years Mimi and Cruise finalized their divorce and released a statement on their choice for doing so. “While there have been very positive aspects to our marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time,” the couple said.

Things turned nasty when Mimi spoke to Playboy magazine, saying, “Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk. At least for that period of time, it looked as though marriage wouldn’t fit into his overall spiritual need.”

In 2014, while Laura Prepon was filming for Orange Is the New Black, her co-stars began speculating that she was dating none other than Tom Cruise.

Both Tom and Laura were quick to deny the rumors with the actress saying, “It’s just so funny that, when people don’t know, they just make stuff up, [like] apparently I’m dating Tom Cruise right now.” Prepon continued, “And apparently he doesn’t want me doing [OITNB] because I portray a lesbian and I’m a Scientologist.”

Following his divorce from Katie Holmes, Cruise reportedly began dating Yolanda Pecoraro. While she was one of the lesser known actresses that Cruise had dated, there was one thing that separated her from all the other ladies – she was a devout Scientologist.

According to Andrew Morton’s book, Tom Cruise: An Unauthorised Biography, the couple first met at a Scientology event in Spain and, when asked about the actor, Pecoraro said, “Yes, I knew and still know Tom Cruise. And no, I’m not married or engaged.”

She is one of the most successful actresses in Hollywood and, while Cruise has appealed to many leading ladies over the years, Scarlett Johansson was not one of them.

The Avengers star had been captured a handful of times by the paparazzi alongside Cruise, but there was never an intimate situation between the two, and there was no truth to them ever dating. It seems that Cruise’s Scientology ways never appealed to Johansson and she was not one of the famous actresses to ever date or marry Cruise.

Many co-stars have such strong chemistry on set that feelings between the pair blossom off-screen too, and there is nothing unusual about this.

Therefore, when Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz worked together on the movie, Knight & Day, many noticed a beautiful friendship developing between the pair, and rumors of a romance began swirling. These rumors reached an all-time high when Diaz admitted that she had been with Cruz when she turned 40 years old, but it soon became clear that there was nothing more to their relationship.

More recently, rumors swirled that Cruise was involved with The Handmaid’s Tale actress, Elisabeth Moss. Considering both stars are Scientologists and were single at the time of the rumors, the stories about them seemed to carry some weight.

However, Moss quickly denied the rumors and even went on to state that she does not have time these days to date while filming for the critically acclaimed show. “It’s actually a problem. But I’m very focused on my work,” the actress said.

In 2016, when Cruise had appeared to be single for a few years, news had emerged that Cruise had been dating a mystery woman. During productions of the most recent installment of Mission Impossible at the time, it was believed that Cruise had been off the market for some months.

The only information revealed about the mystery woman was that she was British and a “very normal and pretty” woman, according to a source. It was not long, however, until the identity of this British siren became public…

It was revealed that the mysterious Britsh woman in Tom’s life was his co-star on Mission Impossible: Fallout, Vanessa Kirby.

At the time, Kirby had recently risen to prominence for her role as Princess Margaret in the Netflix hit, The Crown, and suggested in an interview that she was dating someone. After the public caught sight of the pair in photos on the set of Mission Impossible, everything seemed to add up, and there was no reason to doubt that the two were an item.

Although many believed it to be true, E! News later revealed that the recent rumors surrounding Tom Cruise’s romance with his co-star carried little weight, and even Vanessa Kirby weighed in on the topic.

“We didn’t talk about it. Stuff is written about everybody all the time, but it isn’t true. It just went away because it was so ridiculous,” the actress said. “We didn’t talk about it because we just need to ignore stuff. And I am sure Tom does too.”

While Tom has dated a number of leading ladies over the years and has been married twice, this is nothing unusual in Hollywood. With the pressure of the industry and the changes that come with fame, many families suffer as a consequence.

When looking at Tom Cruise, however, looking at his religious affiliation, beliefs, and his eccentric character has been more interesting to people. The actor has certainly made headlines for his romantic links, but his outlandish behavior and comments have also often made the news.

Away from his box-office hits, Tom Cruise is heavily affiliated with the Church of Scientology and his dedication to the religion. Although the Church is followed by many celebrities, even having a celebrity center because it has proven so popular, Tom Cruise remains one of the most famous advocates for the religion.

Over the years, Tom continues to put the Church before anything else in his life and inflicts Scientology beliefs into everything he does. So much so, people saw a correlation between his beliefs and his marriages.

While Tom Cruise has been linked to many ladies over the years, some of the rumors have been more ludicrous than others. In 2017, it was reported that Cruise was dating Maleficent actress, Angelina Jolie, with the National Enquirer stating that Jolie was trying to make Brad Pitt jealous following their split.

However, at the same time, it was reported that Jolie was not looking to date and this contradicted the National Enquirer’s suggestions. Moreover, it has also been said that Cruise previously dated Jane Fonda.

Tom’s affiliation with the Scientology movement and the Church has been one of his biggest obstacles between him and his relationships, but it can be argued that there is more to the breakdown of his romances.

Having been an actor from an early age, and going on to have great success over the years, there is no denying that his career has taken its toll on his personal life. In nearly four decades, which is the majority of his lifetime, Tom has starred in 46 films.

After Mimi’s comments went to print, the actress released a statement explaining that her words had been misunderstood when speaking about Tom. At the time, however, 23-year-old Tom had already moved on with Australian actress Nicole Kidman after they met on the set of Days of Thunder.

The young actors hit it off immediately and quickly became one of Hollywood’s biggest power couples after they made their romance public. Kidman and Cruise’s relationship, meanwhile, was different to the actor’s previous ones…

Speaking of the first time she saw Cruise, Kidman recalled, “I remember being so nervous and seeing Tom Cruise drive up in a Porsche . . . He got out of the car and walked through the door, and I was like, ‘Ah.’ My jaw dropped.”

She continued, “He basically swept me off my feet. I fell madly, passionately in love.” Kidman was five years younger than Cruise and, that same year, in 1990, the couple got married. This was the same year that Cruise and Mimi finalized their divorce.

With such a strong affiliation with the Church of Scientology, Nicole Kidman followed suit, despite her father being a psychologist and considered an enemy of the Church.

David Miscavige, the leader of the Church, desperately wanted Tom to stay with the Church, so he pulled out all the stops for the newlyweds. This meant Miscavige had to put this ‘oppressive person’ father-in-law to one side and allowed Tom and Nicole to reside in Scientology’s International Base where they could study the religion full-time.

The Scientology International Base was also known as Gold Base and the headquarters for the religion. With high walls topped with blades and barbed wire together with 24-hour surveillance, the compound is heavily guarded.

Meanwhile, the 50-building base is lived in by the elite of the Church, the Sea Orgs, who sign a contract with the Church for one billion years. While this shows their dedication to the religion, it also suggests that the security at Gold Base is to stop members from escaping.

The secret organization has been hit with plenty of controversy over the years, with ex-members speaking out about the on-goings on base. One former Sea Org member explained that officers would abuse them, and they would work for 16-hour days, making just $17 a week.

Meanwhile, they lived in terrible unlivable communal housing, and the media have suggested over 100 members try to escape every year. However, these escapees are caught by “pursuit teams.” It was said that Cruise paid Sea Orgs 40 cents an hour to customize his vehicles.

While followers practice Scientology as their religion, many people have argued that Scientology is not a religion, but a cult. Actress Lead Remini, who is an ex-member of the Church, is a vocal advocate against Scientology and wants the practice to be banned.

Others argue that the Church is a money-making scheme since all members are required to give large donations to the Church which are tax-exempt. While the organization remains to have strict control over their members, it has been guilty of criminal activities including fraud and harassment.

While Tom and Nicole’s marriage was going strong, the power couple chose to adopt two children three years into their marital bliss. In 1993, they adopted their daughter, Isabella, and, two years later, they adopted their son, Connor.

After 11 years together, however, their marriage began to break down, and Tom filed for divorce. During their divorce proceedings, Kidman discovered she was pregnant. While many reports suggested that the actress had suffered a miscarriage, Kidman later revealed she suffered from an ectopic pregnancy.

As well as ending her marriage with Cruise, Nicole also left the Church of Scientology. Since her children, Isabella and Connor, were both practicing Scientology, they continued to live with their father following their parents’ divorce.

When asked about leaving the Church, Kidman said, “I’ve chosen not to speak publicly about Scientology.” She added, “I have two children who are Scientologists – Connor and Isabella – and I utterly respect their beliefs.” However, since she was named a suppressive person by the Church, Kidman’s relationship with her children became strained.

It was not long until Tom was back on the dating scene following his divorce and, once again, was linked to some leading ladies. In 2001, the actor filmed Vanilla Sky and sparked a romance with Penelope Cruz.

Three years later, however, the couple ended their relationship, and it was claimed that the Church of Scientology were hopeful in helping Tom find a wife within the religion. While the Church vehemently denied these claims, an inside source later confirmed them.

Tom Cruise became romantically linked to actress Nazanin Boniadi, who is famous for her roles in How I Met Your Mother and Homeland, and who is another celebrity member of the Church of Scientology.

The famous pair dated from Fall of 2004 to early 2005 and, speaking of their brief romance, Boniadi said in 2013, “I’d rather not talk about that. It’s something that I’m not happy to… Like I said, I have so many positive things happening in my life, it’s a shame not to talk about that.”

Over ten years ago, Tom Cruise believed that A-List actress Sofia Vergara could embrace his Scientology beliefs. It was reported that the Modern Family actress briefly dated Cruise following the end of his relationship with Penelope Cruz.

Reporters suggested that the famous pair were an item after they were photographed walking out of a party together hosted by Will Smith in 2005. Nevertheless, nothing serious came from their relationship, and Cruise was still yet to meet someone who ticked all the right boxes.

The world soon learned that Tom Cruise had fallen madly in love when he made his feelings very clear on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Cruise began dating actress Katie Holmes in April 2005, and the actor appeared on the talk show where he displayed some bizarre behavior, making the episode infamous. Having jumped up and down on the couch, Cruise told Oprah, “I’m in love. I’m in love and it’s one of these things where you want to be cool, like, ‘Yeah I like her’…that’s not how I feel.”

In October 2005, the couple, now dubbed TomKat, announced that they were expecting their first child together. Tom and Katie welcomed their daughter Suri Cruise in April the following year and, seven months later, Holmes and Cruise married in an elaborate ceremony.

In November 2006, the famous couple wed in a 15th century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy, where they had a Scientology ceremony and guests included many famous members of the Church. The best man, in fact, was the leader of the Church, David Miscavige.

Although TomKat’s relationship looked like sunshine and roses from the outside, it seemed to be a different story behind closed doors. Their marriage became the center of speculation, with many speaking out on their strained relationship.

The reports had some truth to them, with the couple announcing their divorce in 2012 after five and a half years of marriage. During their divorce proceedings, more news about their split came to light, with it being said that Holmes initiated the divorce because she was scared to lose Suri to Scientology.

At the time of their divorce, Katie Holmes was 33. While age is said to be nothing but a number, there was more to this fact. All three of Tom’s ex-wives were aged 33 when they got a divorce from the A-List actor, and many believed this was not just by pure coincidence.

Looking further into the matter, it turns out that Scientology had a part to play in this because the religion was founded in Phoenix, Arizona, which is situated on the 33rd parallel.

The number 33 also holds great prominence in Scientology because of its origins and interpretations in accordance with the religion. The number 33 is viewed as the “Master Teacher” in numerology and is considered to be the link to altruism and positive energy.

In Scientology, these two ideals are constantly upheld and parishioners work towards these values by understanding and learning Dianetics. Since Cruise is one of the most famous members of the Church, many questioned whether these ideals played a part in the breakdown of his third marriage.

While it may seem strange that Tom would end his marriage at this particular point because of a link to Scientology and positive energy, there is a reason to believe this could be the case due to past events.

Tom has shown that he injects the religion into his relationships, and some sources came forward to insist that the Church of Scientology chose Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes to marry the actor. Further stories even claimed that at one point the Church and Cruise wiretapped Nicole Kidman’s phone!

Following her divorce from Cruise and breaking away from Scientology, Nicole was named a suppressive person by the Church and lost contact from her own children. This meant that the actress was not even invited to her daughter’s wedding.

Meanwhile, Scientology also played a huge part in Cruise’s marriage to Holmes, and reports suggested that members of the Church moved into the couple’s home. Similar to Nicole, Katie was named a suppressive person by the Church following her divorce and labeled as an “anti-social individual.”

During their divorce proceedings, it was believed that Scientology had played a considerable part in the breakdown of TomKat. Holmes was scared that the Church would make Suri disconnect from her, just as Nicole Kidman’s daughter had, and Katie did not want her daughter to join the Sea Orgs.

Some suggested that Tom had wished for his daughter to give herself entirely to the religion, which would mean joining the organization. It was David Miscavige’s father who confirmed this, and added, “It’s a toxic policy that ruins lives.”

To the Church of Scientology, Cruise is viewed as being one of the most powerful and prominent members. However, those who have come to know Cruise within the religion have spoken of the actor as a bad person.

Actress and former Scientologist, Leah Remini, was a member of the Church for 34 years and had personal contact with Cruise. Remini stated that Cruise is an entirely different person in the Church than behind a camera and that he was considered a “diabolical” person to other Scientologists.

Over the years, Cruise has remained friendly during interviews and during red carpet appearances, but things changed when he was questioned about Scientology in 2005. The infamous interview with Today Show host Matt Lauer saw Tom snap back when asked about Katie Holmes embracing Scientology.

“It’s something you don’t understand. You can be a Christian and be a Scientologist. It is a religion in that it deals with the spirit, you as a spiritual being.” Everyone was shocked when Cruise demeaned Lauer’s intelligence with an onslaught during his interview.

While the correlation between the number 33 and the breakdown of Tom’s marriages could be a pure coincidence, there is no doubt from Tom’s behavior that he will always put the Church first.

It was clear to all that Cruise put his religion and dedication to Scientology above his marriages, so it would come as no surprise if he did run his life according to the number 33. While there has been a pattern so far, we will just have to wait and see what happens with his future relationships.
