The bride may be center of attention when it comes to her wedding day, but all eyes are focusing on someone else too. Other than the groom, the mother-of-the-bride is playing host and wants to look her best in front of all her guests.

According to fashion expert Julie Sabatino, founder of The Stylish Bride, and Diane Gottsman, national etiquette expert, there are certain do's and don'ts.

1. Don't Over Accessorize

Sabatino states, "Keep it classic and simple, and don't overdo it with statement pieces as a general rule." After all, it is your daughter's time to shine, so it is not a time to experiment or wear anything outrageous. There is an exception, however. Should you be wearing a simple dress, then a statement necklace would be perfect to dress it up. Gottman's advice that simple studs, a ring on each hand, and a bracelet is a perfect choice.

2. Avoid Noisy or Uncomfortable Jewelry

When it comes to bracelet choices, Gottsman says, "You don't want anything too loud or over the top, like fluorescent colors. Don’t wear any jewelry that’s noisy or dangling or distracting." As for rings, she explains they should be on the right hand since you will be shaking a lot of your guest's hands, and "A big ring will hurt your hand, and it will be a disconnect to the person you’re shaking hands with."

3. Know What the Bride and Bridesmaids Are Wearing

Always let the bride know what you are planning to wear so she can give the final approval. This will allow you to coordinate with what she and her bridesmaids are wearing and work together on the big day look. It is also good to check with the mother-of-the-groom to check you are on the same page and, of course, not going to turn up in the same dress!

4. Stick to a Small Purse

"A nice little purse is a beautiful statement," says Gottsman. "Make it tasteful and small so you can place it on your lap with a napkin over it for dinner." Since you won't need more than your lipstick and perhaps a credit card, you only need something that fits the essentials.
