Amber Mills, a 31-year-old from North Richland Hills, Texas, was a marine, but serious health issues took their toll, and now she can only work part-time, in addition to being a full-time mom. “With the multiple sclerosis and all of the health issues I have, I had become, you know, emotionally defeated in life and just had a lot of issues,” She added, “I couldn’t work anymore and I started to get, you know, really depressed.”

After hunting around online, she came across a competition online that she thought could relieve her depression. Mills created a wedding gown that she made out of bathroom tissue. It was even impressive enough that it earnt her third-place in the Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com 10th Annual Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest. But how did she do it?

Contestants were tasked with making a dress and headpiece using only Charmin brand toilet paper, tape, glue, and a needle and thread. It also had to be worn be a real person. Mills took on the challenge and decided on a vintage Hollywood glamour theme made using vintage blue and green toilet paper she found on eBay. She found a technique to make the bodice, by boiling down the paper then adding plenty of glue and mixing it until it’s “just like it’s mashed potatoes.”

Given her busy schedule being a full-time mom to three kids and considering her health condition, it took Mills three months to complete the gown and veil, which was longer than most applicants needed to complete theirs. In fact, she said the hardest part was not even the dress, “My veil was the hardest part by far. It took weeks!” Mill says, “I made a frame out of wooden rods and hand wove the entire thing out of heavy-duty sewing thread. Then I used white Mod Podge hot glue to make the tiny pearls that I applied one by one with tweezers. I wanted it to look real.”

The mom received $2,500 for her third-place finish and plans to use the money to catch up on bills and buy a new purse.
