Heidi Parker and Ed Savitt met like most young couples – when they were in college. The couple fell for each other fast, and as they became more serious, they enjoyed major milestones together. As they grew closer, they moved in together, looking forward to starting a life together. Like most couples, they wanted their families to meet before they took the next step in their relationship. What they didn’t know was that while looking through old photo albums, Heidi’s mother would find something that would change the course of their relationship. The young couple’s “love at first sight” story would get a special twist that no one was expecting.
A New Chapter Begins…
Heidi Parker knew that once she went off to college she would want to move out of her parents’ house. She was excited to start her life as a college student at Newcastle University in England. Being as close to her family as she was, it was hard to say goodbye, but she knew it was time for a change.
She was very close to her mother so going off to college that was 130 miles away was difficult. She had hoped that she would find someone to date in college, but she would have never guessed that she would meet the love of her life there.
Living The Dream
Leaving her childhood house meant that Heidi would have to build herself a new place to call home. Debating on what kind of living situation she wanted, Heidi ended up deciding she wanted to get an apartment with a few roommates off-campus.
She wanted to experience college in the most authentic way possible – a young, vibrant bachelorette pad. Looking for an apartment isn’t a simple task. She and her soon-to-be roommates looked long and hard for the perfect accommodation. After seeing and declining many apartments, they found their perfect place. Or so they thought…
Not Exactly What She Was Expecting
Living with roommates is hard. Heidi gave it a chance but a little while after living together, she realized that this wasn’t exactly the lifestyle she was looking for her. She decided that she wanted to live alone. Heidi started her search in hopes of finding a new place, one she could call home.
Along with the excitement, she felt fear. She was a bit worried that she wouldn’t find a living situation that was both within her budget but also up to her standards. Heidi realized that she could afford to live alone, knowing she wanted something modest and close to campus. She ended up finding the perfect studio near the college campus. It was perfect timing too! The new school year was about to begin.
Starting Off Fresh
She was ready for the next step in adulthood – living alone. She moved out of her old place and into her new studio. She was excited about all the new things to come, but she didn’t realize that one of those things was her future husband.
Decorated exactly to her taste, Heidi settled into her new apartment easily and was enjoying her new life. She had pretty much forgotten what it had been like living with roommates, she couldn’t believe it had taken her this long to live on her own. Just then she received a surprising Facebook message from someone she had never met before, a guy named Ed…
A Little Help Was Needed
The reason for Ed’s reaching out was simple; he didn’t know how to use the washing machine in his new apartment – the same apartment that Heidi used to live in.
He had found a post that Heidi was tagged in, connected the dots (that he was living in her old apartment) and thought that she might be able to help. She tried to explain the instructions over Facebook. It seemed more complicated than she had initially thought, so she decided to go over and show him in person.
More Than Happy To Help
Heidi went over to Ed’s to teach him how to use the washing machine. She might have had an ulterior motive to do so, admitting she went over because she thought he was hot.
Heidi arrived at her old apartment to show Ed how to use the washing machine, surprised that a man of his age didn’t know how to use the simple machine. She showed him exactly what to do and hung around to make sure he was able to complete the process himself.
Mustering Up Courage
While at the apartment, Heidi secretly hoped that Ed would ask her out. “I thought he was gorgeous, I thought he was actually amazing,” Heidi said. “All I can remember thinking is ‘wow, he is hot.’” She hadn’t met that many guys since she had started college, so Ed was a breath of fresh air.
She waited around, hoping he would make a move. With one foot already out the door, Ed stopped her and said he had something to ask her. She was hoping he wasn’t going to ask her about more of the house’s appliances. He invited her to go out with him at a cafe close to the apartment. She was excited; her house call ended exactly the way she had hoped. The hot guy from Facebook had asked her out.
The Rest Was History
While on their coffee date, Heidi realized that there was a lot more than meets the eye. The name of the tenant living at her old apartment was Ed Savitt. He was also a student attending Newcastle University, studying business and psychology.
He had big plans for his future and planned on opening his own store when he graduated. Ed had planned on focusing all of his attention on excelling in school – but on that day, both his and Heidi’s college experience was about to change.
When We Grow Up
Heidi and Ed never thought that a single Facebook message would change their lives forever. The initial coffee date turned into a second date, and soon the couple became inseparable. The power couple stayed together throughout college.
They learned everything about each other; they were so completely in love with each other it had felt like they had known each other since they were children. They enjoyed their college days together, dreaming about graduating and starting a life together.
As college came to an end, the duo had to start thinking about their post-grad lives together. After much discussion, they decided that they both wanted to live in London but had decided against moving in together quite yet. Heidi wanted to focus on her career.
She had an important position in the PR world. Ed was focused on following his life-long dream of opening up a business, a coffee shop. The couple’s relationship was solid despite the fact that they weren’t living together yet.
Taking The Next Step
The college sweethearts eventually took the next step in their relationship; they moved in together. As they realized that this was it and that they were going to be together forever, they wanted their families to meet each other finally.
They hoped that their parents would love each other as much as they did. They didn’t realize that Heidi’s mother would reveal something about Heidi’s past that would change the way they viewed their relationship forever.
Four years after they started dating, Heidi and Ed’s mothers finally met. The couple was nervous; they hoped that it would go smoothly, that it wouldn’t be too embarrassing and that the mothers would have a nice conversation. To make sure it was a perfect night, they prepared everything in advance.
They made a dinner reservation at their favorite restaurant. Fiona, Ed’s mother, and Kay, Heidi’s mother seemed to hit it off right away. They started swapping stories about their beloved children.
We Have So Much In Common
As dinner proceeded, the two mothers realized that their families had more in common than they thought. The two families loved to sail and often planned trips around this activity. The two mothers chatted about their shared passions and were excited that their children had invited them to dinner.
The night was going great, but was about to get even better! The nervous young couple was about to share some big news. They were nervous about their mothers’ reaction…
The BIG Announcement
Heidi and Ed interrupted the women’s bonding to break the exciting news – they were engaged to be married! Kay and Fiona were thrilled to hear that their beloved babies were going to tie the knot. They were happy they got to know each other, learning more about their child’s partner’s past and family.
It was at this point that Heidi’s mother decided to share one of her favorite stories – when Heidi met her first boyfriend on vacation some years back. A story that was surprisingly familiar to everyone sitting at the table.
Heidi’s First Love
Kay proceeded in telling the story of how when Heidi was six years old, and the family took a trip to Turkey. Heidi met a little boy about her age, and would not leave his side the whole vacation. They spent the entire trip side by side, holding hands and playing.
She soon realized that this story might not be as suitable for this special occasion as she had thought. She shifted the focus back to the engagement celebrations. This was not the last time this story would come up; in fact, it was more relevant than any of them had realized.
Time To Say Goodbye
The four soon-to-be family members were thrilled, they could not stop smiling. They decided to wrap up dinner, they would have the rest of their lives to share memories. Saying goodbye with hugs, kisses, and tears of joy, they all went their separate ways.
Kay, Heidi’s mother, had a weird feeling about the story she had told, she couldn’t stop thinking about what had happened, ecstatic but suspicious. She kept thinking about that little boy, Heidi’s first boyfriend.
A Gut Feeling
She tried to shake off the weird feeling she had felt since telling the story at dinner, after all, two weeks had passed. She wanted to shift her focus on the upcoming wedding, excited for her daughter and future son-in-law. She decided to do some cleaning, to make room for presents and wedding supplies.
The thought that maybe she would find a special something, something she couldn’t stop thinking about had crossed her mind. Then the photo albums in the corner of the attic caught her eye.
Looking through the albums, she found the specific one she had been looking for, an album that said “Gumbet, July 1997”. It had been about two decades since she had looked through the albums, but she had a sneaking suspicion that she would find exactly what she was looking for.
Flipping through the pages of the vacation album, skipping through family photos and beautiful Turkish landscapes. Then all of a sudden – she froze. It was Heidi and her first-ever boyfriend.
It’s Got To Be True
This time, he looked surprisingly familiar. The young boy was exactly how she had remembered him, blond, shy, and standing next to Heidi just as he had the entire vacation. Kay knew there was a particular reason she was looking for this picture.
She was speechless and knew that her suspicion was correct. She thought she might as well be losing her mind because this was the craziest thing she had ever seen, something so crazy it just didn’t seem real.
A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words
Heidi’s mother was pretty convinced that she remembered correctly, that this little boy’s name was Ed. The same Ed that was engaged to marry her daughter. This didn’t seem possible, it was too good to be true.
She didn’t think that her daughter would be the one that would settle this mystery. She texted Ed’s mother with the picture. Fiona immediately called Kay. She confirmed what Kay knew all along. Heidi’s first boyfriend was Ed!
As the two mothers remembered the vacation, they decided they had to tell their children to see how they would react. She sent Heidi the photo, and Heidi was stunned. The man she was about to marry was her first boyfriend. The college sweethearts were childhood sweethearts!
Heidi thought that deep down there was some sort of subconscious realization that they had shared time together before they met as adults. Now that they were about to be wed, they wanted to incorporate the news into their wedding.
Love At First Sight, Twice
They knew what they had to do; they used the photos of them as six-year-olds holding hands on the wedding invitations. The childhood sweethearts got married in August of 2017.
They experienced love at first sight twice! Once at the age of six and once again, when they were college students. Heidi and Ed could tell people they married their first love in one of the craziest love stories. The two were destined to be together.
Happily Ever After
It was not only that the two love-birds met in Turkey, but that the families had met as well. The in-laws who became connected through their children’s marriage became even more interconnected because of this story. They plan vacations together, go sailing together, and are still in awe over this story.
The story made headlines, going viral in almost every platform. Heidi and Ed have been together for years, and are still in shock about how they first met, 6-year-old kids that were simply inseparable. A bond that was so strong that they found their way back to each other – 20 years later.
